How to Calculate Concrete Blocks

The formula for standard 8×8×16" blocks:

blocks = (wall_length_ft × wall_height_ft) × 1.125 × (1 + waste_pct / 100)

The 1.125 factor comes from: 1 sqft / (16/12 × 8/12) = 1 / 0.889 = 1.125

Common Mistakes:

  1. Not counting corner blocks and half blocks separately — you need special units at every corner and pier
  2. Forgetting to order cap blocks (solid top) for the final course on retaining and garden walls
  3. Using 4" blocks for structural walls — minimum 8" for foundation and load-bearing
  4. Not including grout fill cost for reinforced walls — fill adds 30-40% to material cost

Frequently Asked Questions

How many concrete blocks do I need for a wall?

Multiply wall length (ft) × height (ft) × 1.125 for standard 8×8×16" blocks. A 40×8 ft wall needs 360 blocks. Add 5-10% for waste, corner blocks, and half blocks. That's about 380-400 blocks to order.

How much does a concrete block wall cost?

Materials (blocks + mortar + rebar + fill) cost $6-10 per square foot. Professional installation adds $10-25/sqft. A 40×8 ft wall (320 sqft) costs $2,000-3,500 DIY or $5,000-11,000 installed. Foundation walls with waterproofing cost more.

How much mortar do I need for concrete blocks?

About 6-7 bags of 70-lb mortar per 100 blocks for standard 3/8" joints. A 360-block wall needs approximately 22-25 bags of mortar. Type S mortar is standard for below-grade and load-bearing walls. Pre-mixed mortar in bags is easiest for small projects.

Do concrete block walls need rebar?

Yes, for any structural, load-bearing, or retaining wall. Building codes typically require vertical rebar (#4 or #5) at 48" on center with filled cores, plus horizontal rebar (joint reinforcement or bond beam blocks) every 48" vertically. Non-structural garden walls under 4 ft may not require rebar — check local code.

What is the difference between a cinder block and a concrete block?

True cinder blocks (made with coal cinders as aggregate) are lighter, weaker, and no longer manufactured. All modern blocks are concrete masonry units (CMU) made with Portland cement and aggregate. The term 'cinder block' persists colloquially but technically refers to an obsolete product.
